The process begins with active cold immersion to reduce blood flow, swelling, and inflammation. Next, athletes move to hot water immersion, which increases blood flow to flush the lymphatic system and drain toxins. They then alternate back to cold and finish in hot water, leaving their bodies and minds more relaxed.
