Watch as Coach Alex Armenteros discusses the start and how he emphasizes to his hurdlers that you have to be in it to win it. If you are going to lose the race do it in the last 100m and not at the beginning. The approach to the first hurdle is an 8 or 7 stride trying to establish rhythm and balance. With the 8-stride approach, the trail leg is in the front block and with a 7-stride approach the lead leg is in the front block.
