Watch as Dr. Greg Dale explains that it is key to hold athletes accountable but do so without destroying their confidence or undermining their dignity. He talks about the difference of being intense and being emotional as a coach. He suggests not creating a culture of fear that when your athletes make a mistake, they must worry what the response from the coach will be. Don’t create a culture of fear of failing and have athletes not willing to take chances. Don’t make it personal when players make mistakes as this will not motivate them. If is good to have fun with the players but be careful of sarcasm and calling out is OK if your intent is to instruct and help them get better but not if you are belittling and humiliating them.
