Watch as Coach Scott Hippensteel explains that at every distance, he wants the race to feel short and slow. He states that a decent high school cross country runner needs to run a 5:20 mile pace which is 16:40 for a 5K, or 80 seconds a quarter. The runner needs to train at a 70 second quarter pace to make it seem slow and farther to make it seem short.
