Double Jump Drill

August 29, 2014 • By AVCA

Double Jump Drill

By: Miles Kydd

Provided by: AVCA

1

Objective: To increase lateral movement speed and stability with shuffle, cross-over or swing blocking movement patterns

Equipment Needed: 4 hitting boxes, volleyballs

Directions:

  1. One athlete with ball on each of the two hitting boxes at net, 10 feet apart.
  2. Athlete holds the ball above the plane of the net.
  3. Three blockers - one at net in front of left side athlete/box. Other two blockers in line ready to enter drill.
  4. Blocker jumps, takes ball from athlete with ball and without stopping at landing springs back up to replace ball assertively in athlete's hands. Upon landing the 2nd time, athlete shuffles 10 feet to repeat action with right side athlete/box, repeat moving to left side, repeat moving to right side, finish repetition by moving to right side again. 4 movements, 5 actions, 10 total Jumps
  5. Blocker #2 moves in and completes repetition, blocker #3 follows. All blockers do 3 sets of block jumps and switch groups at net and blocking. Each group repeats drill 2 or 3 times.
  6. It is possible to have two plus stations working at once depending on space and number of participants.
  7. Reference Point: Coach should be keying on: the amortization phase between the two jumps; the athlete's ability to land "on balance"; and the athlete's footwork patterns i.e. False steps; and the athlete's ability to penetrate and finish the block action. But, feet and footwork is the key!
  8. Observation Point: Coach should station themselves behind the blockers or in a position they feel allows them to watch footwork patterns.

Variations:

  1. Change footwork pattern for movement.
  2. Increase or decrease length of pre-blocking movement.
  3. Coach/athlete hits second ball and fourth ball.
  4. Add 3rd station and have athletes move on command to particular station.
  5. Block vs. hitter in all stations (no longer a Double Jump Drill).
