Passing Elbows & Clubbing/Chopping Hand Fighting Drills with Mike Poeta – Univ. of Illinois

Watch full video with Wrestling +Plus here. • April 3, 2025 • By Wrestling Coaches Insider

Watch as Coach Mike Poeta explains and demonstrates hand fighting drills they use to warmup. The Passing Elbows Drill involves the opponent having a collar tie and switching from side to side. Coach explains how pushing and letting go makes the opponent off balance and this will help with your hand fighting. Take the off hand and stiff arm the opponent's shoulder, duck your head and pass the elbow which helps get the opponent's body turned and creates a good angle. The opponent works on bear crawling after the elbow pass and squaring up. Clubbing and chopping are the 2nd parts of the warmup and involve the collar tie. Take the hand on the side of the collar tie and come over and thumb block, making sure to straighten his arm. Slide the hand down and chop while clubbing with the off hand to the head. Get both hands on the opponent and stalk him.
