Double-Sided Swing Hit

By: Kalani Mahi University of Northern Iowa

Provided by: AVCA

1

Objective: Train players to serve receive then swing hit down the line. Serve receive training

Equipment Needed: 15-20 balls, 2 ball carts, 2 extra antennas

Directions: Divide your team into two groups. Be sure each group has enough players for the following: Serve, Shag, Set, Pass, 2 Passer/Hitters. If you do not have a minimum of 12 players, for one group and run the drill on ½ the court.

Group 1
SE1: Serves to P1 or P/H1 (pass ball to setter) S1: Sets outside to P/H1 P/H 1: Attacks down line through the antennae, then rotates back to end of swing hitting line. If set does not allow line attack, player just tips through the antennae so they do not attack into the other drill.

Group 2
Same as group 1

Rotation
When:
• Time: 2-3 minutes or
• Group Goal: Achieve an attack goal for each group (i.e. each group must attack 3 line swings successfully in order for that group to rotate) or
• Team Goal: Both groups must attack successfully through the antennae six times before both groups rotate.

Where:
• Create a rotation order (around the setter): Serve – Pass – Pass/Hit – Shag – Serve

Variations:
1. If you have various skill levels on your team, you can divide the team according to skill level and adjust the drill appropriately. The more advanced group can still receive a serve, while the developmental group can receive a toss from the 12’ line or ½ serve.
2. If your team does not have line swing control, run only one drill and fill in extra players into each position (2 setters, 3 pass/hitters, 2 serve, etc.)

Specialized Training:
1. Have your libero's in the passing (P) position. They will not rotate into the passing/hitting (P/H) position. You will now rotate around the setter and libero.
2. Move the drill to the swing hit from the right-side (P stays in the middle while your P/H moves to the right passing/hitting position), so you setter will now have to back set. Be sure to have your attackers still hitting line so they do not attack into the other drill.
