Offensive players 6 and 7 start at the foul lines extended out of bounds on each sideline of the court. Execution 1. The coach passes the ball to the offense; the defense reacts by closing out to defend each offensive player man to man (figure 6.10). 2. The offense immediately takes the shot. 3. When the shot is taken, the defense attempts to maintain inside position by boxing out while all seven offensive players pursue the rebound. 4. If the defense secures the rebound, they receive 1 point for their team. 5. Players repeat the drill until the defensive team scores 5 points. Coaching Point This is an overload drill that puts the five defensive players in an extreme disadvantage as they fight to secure the rebound against seven offensive players. Master rebounding in a five-on-five setting before attempting this challenging drill. REBOUND POUND DRILL Setup • Use six players and one basketball. • Three offensive players are on the baseline facing up the court and three defensive players are on the opposite side of the court across the free-throw line with their backs to the offense. Execution 1. The coach blows the whistle. 2. The three offensive players sprint up the court toward the three defensive players. 3. When the offensive players reach half-court, the coach will blow a second whistle and attempt a shot. 4. When the defense hears the second whistle, they are allowed to turn around and face the charging offensive players (figure 6.11). 5. The defense works to maintain inside position and secure the rebound while the offense pursues the basketball. 6. The team that secures the rebound receives 1 point; then the drill resets as the offense goes to defense. 7. Players repeat the drill until one team earns 7 points. Coaching Point Communication is key. Players should be proactive and communicate to their teammates which player they are going to box out. |
