Defending the High Post:

Focus
Keeping the ball out of the middle while defending the high post.

Procedure
Players begin five on five on the half court. Follow these steps:

1 1.
A coach or one of the guards begins the drill by passing to either 03 or 04, both of whom are set up at the free-throw line extended on the wings.

2. X3 has his hands up to discourage a post pass and his body down, preparing to force baseline.

3. X5 is in a three-quarter denial defensive position. His left arm is on the ball side, and his legs are straddling 05's leg on the strong side. X5's primary function is to keep the ball out of the middle. X4 is responsible for protecting the basket.

4. X1, one pass away, drops to the lap of (in front of) 05 to discourage a pass.

5. X2, two passes away, drops two steps toward the free-throw line and two steps to the ball to support weak side. X2 takes X4's position if X4 goes to trap.

6. X4, three passes away, is in a weak-side support position and has basket-protection responsibilities.

7. If 03, with the ball, drives baseline, X4 rotates to the strong-side block and stops dribble penetration (figure 7.2). X2 drops (sinks and fills) and is responsible for keeping 04 off the boards. X1 drops to the middle, looking to intercept a pass from 03 to the middle, or rotates out and covers the first pass out if a double team occurs.

Defending the MidPost:

Focus
Keeping the ball out of the middle while defending the midpost.

Procedure1
Keeping the ball out of the middle while defending the midpost.

1. 03 has the ball at the free-throw line extended, by dribble or pass. X3 has his arms extended to deflect a pass and straddles 03's outside leg, forcing the baseline drive (figure 7.3).

2. 01 (or any offensive player) occupies the strong-side corner. Xl, one pass away, drops a full step to the middle, in support position for X3, and looks for the charge or a pass to the corner.

3. X5 is in a three-quarter deny defensive position with his left arm ball side and his legs straddling 05's leg on the strong side. X4 protects the basket. 4. X2, one pass away at the top of the Figure 7.3 Defending the midpost. key, drops to discourage a post pass and supports X3 in case of a middle drive. As the ball drops toward the basket, so does X2, sinking, filling, and looking for the rebound. 02, normally a spot-up shooter, is X2's primary concern. If 02 cuts to the basket or moves away, X2 maintains distance and vision to contain a pass or contest the shot.

5. X4, two passes away, is in total support mode, has basket-protection respon-sibility, and must guard against all lobs to 05.

Defending the Low Post:

Focus
Keeping the ball out of the middle with the low-post defender.

Procedure3
Low post-ups come off direct passes to the post and after turnouts. Players begin five on five on the half court. Follow these steps:

1. 02 has the ball at the free-throw line extended, by dribble or pass.

2. Defensively, X2 keeps the ball on the side by forcing his opponent baseline with an exaggerated overplay, straddling the outside leg of 02 (figure 7.4). X2 must maintain ball pressure, with hands up, to eliminate an easy lob to 05. X5 plays three-quarter topside.

3. X3, at the top of the key, steps toward the ball and provides weak-side support. If the ball rotates to 03, X3 closes out under control and applies pressure to eliminate a lock-and-lob to 05. Figure 7.4 Defending the low post.

4. X1 is now the primary weak-side supporter and has the responsibility of protecting the basket, including guarding against the lob to 05.

5. X4, two passes away, must sink and fill as X1 vacates, and must be alert for 04's flash to the post area or flare screen for 03.
