Rich Barton believes the biggest challenge affecting Athletic Administrators today is a nationwide issue of retention. He explains that constant turnover of administrators of the largest department of every high school can put that department at risk. He cites examples of culture, hazing, and coaches' conduct as risk factors. He feels that the Athletic Director's position is the least understood position in a school district. It is important to find a unique way to help non-athletic administrators and school board members understand the role and workload of the AD position and the impact they have on the entire school.
