7 Steps to Changing a Culture with Deon Birkes, CMAA – Lincoln Consolidated School District (AR)

January 28, 2025 • By National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association

Deon Birkes explains the 7-step process that has helped his program get to the next level. This process has helped raise the level of expectations, the standard of the athlete’s behavior, and instilled the attitude of coming to work every day and working to become a better citizen. The 7-step process starts with:

  1. Evaluate
  2. Determine strengths & weaknesses
  3. Develop common language & actions
  4. Define core values
  5. Create an event
  6. Create workouts & core value tests
  7. Hype it up.

The NIAAA champions the profession of athletic administration through educational opportunities, advocating ethics, developing leaders, and fostering community. Find more information on their website here: niaaa.org.
