1v1 Small Goal Defending Drill with Tony Bowles – Rockwall High School (TX)

July 8, 2025 • By Soccer Coaches Insider

Watch as Coach Tony Bowles explains, and players demonstrate this 1v1 small goal defending drill. The drill starts with the defender playing the ball to the attacker then quickly coming to balance in a good defensive stance. The stance should not be square but staggered with one foot in front of the other as this allows the defender to first turn and run, then step, and lastly flip the hips to take the attacker to the sidelines. The goal is not to get a foul but rather to get the attacker to feel uncomfortable by getting as close as possible and keeping the attacker as far away from the goal as possible.
