Michael Gulino discusses mental health staff training that is essential for your program. He recommends, especially for non-teacher coaches, to instruct them on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). All coaches must understand the confidentiality issue involved when dealing with students. Coaches also must be able to recognize potential mental health issues and effectively communicate with a student and encourage counseling.
