How to Begin New Programs in a School

How to Begin New Programs in a School

Schools all across the United States and in every state have at some time or another had to decide whether or not to begin a new academic or sports program. Several things will be needed and decisions to be made during this process.

One thing that will need to be done is to determine if there is enough genuine interest in the community and the student body to justify implementing the new program. One way to evaluate and find out interest is to have community members and students fill out a survey or questionnaire. If there are possible multiple programs being considered the programs will need to be ranked by importance and interest. The questionnaire/survey could also include several open ended questions to get further feedback to aid in making a decision.

Another thing to consider when implementing a new program is researching what it is going to cost. Determining whether current facilities are adequate or if new buildings/facilities will be needed. This could be a massive expense that could have a huge influence on the decision. If implementing a new academic program the cost of books and/or software, and other required supplies will need to be taken into consideration. If looking at adding a new athletic program the cost of equipment, supplies, salary, and uniforms will need to be looked at closely. Any or all of these requirements can be very costly and need to be extensively evaluated.

A third item to consider when trying to implement a new program is what personnel will be needed to ensure a quality and competitive program. Depending on the subject or program, trying to find appropriately certified personnel to facilitate the programs might be a challenge. There needs to be available and interested personnel to fill the position.

Other things to consider are to check to see if the addition could disrupt or enhance the balance of Title IX. Is the sport sanctioned by the state association? How many neighboring schools participate in the new sports and the cost of travel that will be incurred when scheduling.

Schools and school personnel must remember that even with all the planning in the world there are still going to be unexpected or unforeseen obstacles that will come up and these must be accounted for. Understanding this and having an open mind when these obstacles do arise will help this whole process go as smooth as possible.
