Greg Scott discusses the types of difficult conversations an Athletic Director can have and explains the common mistakes that are made when having them. Difficult conversations usually involve parents, coaches, and athletes but other stakeholders such as boosters and fans can also present a challenge. Common mistakes are having a pre-determined view of the outcome, lack of empathy as in not trying to see the other persons point of view which can be a driving factor in the outcome. Posturing is a major issue and Greg recommends never sitting behind your desk but to arrange your office so that you can sit side by side when having a difficult conversation.
