Michael Gulino believes coaches should be transformational, focusing on the use of sports to help young athletes grow. Positive self-talk, creating a positive team environment, and praising performance and effort are just a few things that will have a positive impact on the mental health of their athletes. If a coach becomes aware of a mental health issue it is important that they know how to make a referral. The keys are recognize and report. They should not attempt to provide a solution on their own.
