Dave Miceli discusses assessing coaches as a way of growing people rather than a way of checking boxes. He stresses that the assessment process must be based on a school's core values. The process starts with a pre-season meeting focusing on goals and how the individual wants to grow as a coach. At mid-season, all athletes partake in a survey and the AD compiles the data and then meets with individual coaches. This helps the coach understand how their athletes see the program from their perspective. The coach can now fine-tune their communications with the team as well as individual players. The final part of the assessment is after the season when the coaches are asked to reflect on how they grew as coaches, if they prevented hazing, and discuss their plan for off-season growth.
