I watched Randy Matson on videos and noticed his right foot was turned to the left at about 160 degrees . I saw him glide pushing off the ball of the foot and gliding into the center of the circle in good position. I found it made teaching the glide technique much easier and not sacrificing position or speed to the power position. Coming off the heel besides being difficult to do properly cause them to come up short of the center of the circle. After many years of coaching I have used it and found it works better than the heel take off. Looking at the world’s gliders even thought they appear to start straight back but push off the ball of the foot landing to the right of center. I think it is superior to the other foot position making technique better and easier to teach.
