Snatch Singles with Jarion Beets – IMG Academy (FL) & Ryan Deakin – Former NCAA Coach https://coachesinsider.com/wrestling/snatch-singles-with-jarion-beets-ponderosa-high-school-co-ryan-deakin-former-ncaa-coach/ https://coachesinsider.com/wrestling/snatch-singles-with-jarion-beets-ponderosa-high-school-co-ryan-deakin-former-ncaa-coach/#respond Sun, 01 Sep 2024 07:06:38 +0000 https://coachesinsider.com/?p=112611 Watch as Coach Jarion Beets discusses how he prefers snatch singles over sweep singles. He notes for larger athletes that doing a snatch single is better for athletes who don’t want to drop to a leg, so at larger weights he has found that snatching is more prevalent. He says in order to do this, you must touch your head to your opponent's head, club your hand behind their neck, then put your other arm on their shoulder, shoot for their leg, and lift it up, and you can finish the move in a number of ways. He advises also that when shooting for the leg, put your head into their ribs, as this will make it more difficult for them to defend. This move allows for low risk, high reward.

Jarion Beets was previously a coach at Ponderosa High School (CO).

He first goes over how to defend when you are in top position and your opponent is in the bottom position. Coach Storniolo emphasizes that the primary move to defend against in this scenario is preventing the bottom athlete from standing up. To ensure this doesn't happen, he advises controlling them with pressure and positioning. This is done by starting off the whistle, placing your arm and wrist under their armpit, and then leaning forward on them to force them to get weight on their hands and drive forward; this way it keeps them in a horizontal position and makes it difficult for them to move vertically.

Once done, shoot for a single leg and lock your hands around the leg.
