I would argue that in addition to accuracy, an effective serve also has no spin (floater) and has a flat trajectory. Speed, float, flat should be the three components of an effective serve. This chair drill can provide an additional challenge to change up serving practice that can effectively work on those three components.

Comment on Communication System for Infielders and Outfielders on Fly Balls with Rudy Garbalosa – Lynn Univ. by Ron Valenti https://coachesinsider.com/baseball/communication-system-for-infielders-and-outfielders-on-fly-balls-with-rudy-garbalosa-lynn-univ/#comment-6283 Sun, 21 Dec 2025 19:32:51 +0000 https://coachesinsider.com/?p=124168#comment-6283 Here’s another idea. Hit flair with a machine to land midway between an infield and outfield position. Once the machine is set, play two players back-to-back on the exact spot. Feed the machine again and when you do have the two players run in opposite directions (towards and away from the machine). When the ball hits, have the other players mark the spot the runners were at that moment.
You have just established two lines for your flair communication drill, infielders on one mark, outfielders on the other.
With both fielders facing the machine, as soon as the ball is fed, the two fielders attempt to catch the flair. If done correctly, most the time the runners should arrive at the ball at the same time.
The inconsistencies of the machine and running speed will make the drill more realistic.
As always, teach the communication skills, such as: it’s the infielder’s ball until call off; the outfielder has preference but needs to call the ball as soon as he knows he can catch it; If called off, the infielder peels around the outfielder and backs him up in case of a dropped ball.

Position two players with better than average speed, back-to-back, and as soon as you place a ball in the machine, have them run in opposite directions. When the ball lands on the ground, have other team members mark the exact spot where the two runners were when the ball hit.
You now have established the staring points (form two lines) for both outfielders and infielders.
Communication drill: When you place a ball in the machine, the first player in each line go after the ball. If set up correctly, the two players should arrive at the landing spot at about the same time.
Use all the rules of communication: Outfielder has preference; it’s the infielder’s ball until called off. They will learn to trust each other and learn the rules of communication.
You can also include a second infielder or outfielder by setting up the drill with 3 players running in different positions. The inconsistency of all machines and players speed will make the drill very realistic.
